Salon Floor Plan Guide: Layout Ideas for Indian Salon Owners
In a salon, the floor plan is the business model. The number of chairs you fit, how fast a client moves from reception to wash to styling, and whether stylists bump into each other at 6pm — all of it is decided before the first mirror goes up. Interiors are expensive to redo, so here's how to get the layout right on paper first, free.
Start with the four zones
Every salon, from a 150 sq ft two-chair setup to a full family salon, is the same four zones arranged well:
- Reception & waiting — the first 5–6 feet from the entrance. Desk, 2–4 waiting seats, retail shelf.
- Styling stations — the revenue floor. Chairs along a mirror wall.
- Wash area — shampoo stations on a plumbing wall, toward the rear, out of the entrance sightline.
- Utility — storage, staff corner, and (if you offer them) a treatment/facial room that needs privacy.
The client should flow through them in that order without doubling back through working stylists: enter → wait → wash → chair → billing → exit.
The numbers that decide your capacity
| Measurement | Minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Distance between chair centres | 4 ft | 4.5–5 ft |
| Clearance behind styling chair | 2.5 ft | 3 ft |
| Main walking aisle | 3 ft | 3.5–4 ft |
| Footprint per styling station (incl. mirror wall) | — | ~5 × 6 ft |
| Wash station footprint | — | ~4 × 7 ft (chair reclines!) |
The mirror wall decides everything else
Pick your longest unbroken wall for stations — no windows, no door swings, no columns. Lighting matters as much as spacing: aim for even, shadow-free light at face height (vertical strips beside mirrors beat a single tube above them). Natural light is a bonus for the waiting area, not for the mirror wall where it causes glare and colour-matching errors.
