Vastu for Shops: The 9-Zone Guide for Indian Businesses
Home Vastu gets all the attention, but shop Vastu is where owners feel the stakes daily — the cash counter, the entrance, where the stock sits. Whether you follow it from conviction or because your family and customers do, here is the complete zone-by-zone guide for commercial spaces, and a free way to score your exact layout.
How shop Vastu differs from home Vastu
The nine zones are identical, but the functions map differently: instead of bedrooms and kitchens, you're placing money, the owner, stock, and the customer's path. The three placements that matter most in every shop, in order: the cash counter, the owner's seat, and the entrance.
The 9 zones for a shop
| Zone | Direction | In a Shop, Use For |
|---|---|---|
| उत्तर (Uttar) | North | Cash counter / galla — Kuber's direction of wealth |
| ईशान (Ishan) | North-East | Deity/photo corner, water, open entry space — keep light |
| पूर्व (Purva) | East | Entrance, display windows, customer area |
| आग्नेय (Agneya) | South-East | Electricals — inverter, fridge compressors, billing machines |
| दक्षिण (Dakshin) | South | Heavy racks, slow-moving stock |
| नैऋत्य (Nairutya) | South-West | Owner's seat (facing North/East) · heaviest storage |
| पश्चिम (Paschim) | West | Display shelves, seating |
| वायव्य (Vayavya) | North-West | Fast-moving stock — items you want to sell quickly |
| ब्रह्मस्थान | Centre | Customer walking space — never block with racks |
The cash counter, in detail
The most asked question in shop Vastu. The traditional guidance: the cash box opens toward the North; the person handling money faces North or East; the counter stays uncluttered and well-lit; and it should be visible from the entrance without blocking it. If your counter must sit elsewhere for practical reasons, orienting the cash drawer to open northward is the commonly used adjustment.
Entrance rules
Common shop defects — and usage fixes that cost nothing
- Cash counter in the South-West with owner facing South → turn the seat to face North or East; shift the cash drawer opening northward.
- Heavy godown stock piled in the North-East → swap with fast movers; heavy goods go South/South-West.
- Racks blocking the centre → open the Brahmasthan into the main customer aisle; sales improve for plain retail reasons too.
- Electricals scattered everywhere → consolidate toward the South-East where wiring allows.
Notice that every fix above is rearrangement, not renovation — which is exactly why scoring your current layout first pays: it separates the free fixes from the expensive ones. For kirana-specific layout ideas (aisle widths, impulse zones, counter placement), see the Kirana Store Layout guide.
